Performing Under Pressure

Keeping your head in the game requires the athlete to translate hard physical work and talent into confidence and results during training and especially competition. Who wants to train arduously from the neck down, only to be sabotaged by a lack of training from the neck up? No one wants to choke. Although negative self-talk creates reactions in both mind and body that hamper performance, physical reactivity, and enjoyment, many athletes have negative and automatic mental “habits” that have never been addressed. Such patterns (including revisiting past errors, jumping too far ahead mentally, or using criticism to motivate), can and should be interrupted, then released.

My mental training approach teaches athletes concrete and specific methods to replace negative cognitive patterns, relax physically when competing, and manage high pressure situations. This is not a sports psychology program for those who want fuzzy bromides and cute slogans. By using proven techniques of self-hypnosis, cognitive restructuring, and visualization, athletes and coaches learn to effectively combine physical and mental training to achieve “total effort” results.
